Joaquin Phoenix definitely deserves the highest of praise for this genius performance, I found him heartbreaking and was overcome with emotion throughout the movie. I don"t think that anyone else could have portrayed the character in such an amazing way. An absolute work of art.

All in all this is a decently made, rather boring film that will mostly appeal to people with little sense of relativity and it would have been better without the comic book element.
And by the way, when it comes to that comic book aspect, they completely missed the point of the character.
